Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva has talked about his partnership with Kalidou Koulibaly as he expects his new Blues teammate to be fully ready for next week’s Premier League opener against Everton. The Blues failed to keep any clean sheet in any of their pre-season games, except for Saturday’s behind-closed-doors second match against Udinese, but Friday’s 3-1 win in Italy showed positive signs. Their unsurprising dominant performance aside, Chelsea only conceded three shots on target throughout the game. Koulibaly’s presence on the left of the back three had a huge positive impact. Silva is even convinced that the Senegal international is ready for his full Premier League debut next week.
Thomas Tuchel’s comments after Chelsea’s 4-0 defeat to Arsenal at the weekend were damning. The German had just seen his side be completely outplayed by their London rivals in Orlando and he was asked whether his team were ready for the Premier League season, that gets underway next weekend. “I can not guarantee,” Tuchel replied when asked if his team would be ready for their clash with Everton on August 6. “I saw today a team in Arsenal who are mentally committed to an idea of playing, a level of exhaustion, a level of physical commitment that we could not match. “Also, a level of mental commitment that we lacked because we have a lot of players who are thinking about leaving and looking at their options. We have players that have left and I think at the moment that is obvious.”
There’s one more pre-season friendly for Chelsea to play. The Blues take on Udinese in Italy on Friday evening, in a game where Tuchel could name what is considered close to the side that will face Everton next weekend. It’s been a while since Tuchel has had to name a 20-man squad for a match. For Premier League matches, teams are required to name a 20-man squad list, with up to nine substitutes available to use from the bench. There’s also the additional factor that five substitutes are allowed now. As well as the search for new players, Chelsea will be determined to offload some unwanted members of the squad. The likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Marcos Alonso and Timo Werner – to name a few – have all been linked with departures from Stamford Bridge this window.
Barcelona are interested in Azpilicueta and Alonso, who both have less than 12 months remaining on their contracts. Meanwhile, Juventus have expressed an interest in ending Werner’s nightmare at Chelsea in recent days. The betting platforms and prediction experts are expecting Chelsea to come on top with the home side having required a magnanimous effort to pull off an upset.
“It was good,” the Brazil international said about his partnership with Koulibaly during the (first) win over Udinese. “He is a player with a lot of experience. He played in Italian football, which for me is the best defensive schooling you can possibly receive. “He is ready for our ideas. He played 70 minutes [against Udinese], and on Saturday, he will be ready to play 90.” Communication is key among defenders and having polyglot personnel certainly helps this Chelsea side. “Normally we speak in French because Edou [Mendy] does too, and [Cesar] Azpi — it worked well,” Silva explained. “The communication is not a problem, we can speak many different languages together.” Aside from Koulibaly, Thomas Tuchel has also used Ethan Ampadu in defence a lot during the pre-season.
The versatile 21-year-old even impressed the manager during their tour in the United States, which may lead to his securing a first-team spot ahead of the new season. However, Tuchel previously also insisted that he wants another new defender this summer and according to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are working on two centre-back targets at the moment.
